Jesse Boykins III

  • Genre:: Soul, R&B
  • From:: Chicago

Jesse Boykins III is a singer / songwriter with a timeless sound. He is the creator of a new approach to music he calls “World Soul” in which he shares a point of view that crosses all genres, generations and cultures. In early 2008, Jesse Boykins III released his debut EP Dopamine: My Life On My Back, a soulful narrative covering a range of emotions from infatuation to lust to obsession with love and the pain of love lost. His follow-up release The Beauty Created, a critically-acclaimed LP soon followed.

The story begins with two brothers, Rootz and Zeebo, who found their way from college in North Carolina via the Caribbean only to end up in Washington, DC. It was in the cultural melting pot of the Nation’s capital that they developed their creative and musical talents. In the heady days of the late 1980s, the brothers Steele would launch the project that has defined their lives: See-I. They quickly became a fixture of DC’s burgeoning Reggae scene crossing paths with Reggae aficionado Eric Hilton who was determined to include them in his future projects. Hilton was opening the Eighteenth Street Lounge and associated record label, and brought Rootz and Zeebo on board. Throughout the 90’s and into the coming millennium they would go on to record, perform and tour with Thievery Corporation.

Then in 2005 Zeebo and Rootz started a regular Wednesday night gig at the Eighteenth Street Lounge that would see them coalescing into one of the greatest live bands the city has ever seen. Slowly gathering momentum, guest musicians and members – from the Thievery Live band and the Chuck Brown band amongst others – the See-I live band would grow into a nationwide touring phenomenon, and are now considered one of America’s premier Reggae party bands

Jetty is new group from New England that takes RnB/Hip Hop influences and puts an indie dance spin on them. At times their set is pure energy with tasteful grooves and smooth lyrics. The band just released two EP’s this year, and is currently in the studio recording their first full length.  Catch them on Spotify, Itunes, or listen below. Be sure to check them out as they grace the stage in this year’s VinoFest lineup.

Clairy Browne and the Bangin’ Rackettes

As flamboyant as their name indicates, Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes are, at heart, an entertaining retro-soul band with inspirations that include jump blues and doo wop. Formed in 2009, they initially based themselves in a onetime coffin factory located in suburban Melbourne, Australia. Big-voiced Browne is the lead singer, joined by Peter Bee (guitar),Camilla (background vocals), Loretta Miller (background vocals), Ruby Jones(background vocals), Ricky Martyn (drums), Darcy McNulty (saxophone),Jules Pascoe (bass), and Gabriel Strangio (piano). Within a short frame of time, they developed material and became a flashy, highly regarded performing act. In November 2011, the band released its first album, the expectedly playful but heartfelt Baby Caught the Bus. It was made available as a download, and CD and vinyl copies were pressed. ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) Radio National named it Album of the Year. In 2012, the band gained wider exposure after its song “Love Letter” was featured in a Heineken ad campaign. In 2013, Baby Caught the Bus was issued in the U.S.

Sugar Bear & EU

EU (Experience Unlimited) is one of the original Washington DC Go-Go bands. Fronted by founding member Gregory “Sugar Bear” Elliott, the original members all attended Ballou High School (currently the subject of a critically acclaimed documentary). The band chose the name Experience due to their respect for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Unlimited because they did not want to limit the range of their music. Their early regional hits included EU Freeze, Lock Your Butt, and Knock ‘Em Out Sugar Ray. Although they are best known for their Grammy nominated, massive worldwide hit Da-Butt from Spike Lee’s “School Daze” soundtrack, EU scored hits with Salt & Papa (Shake Your Thang), with rap innovator Kurtis Blow (Party Time), and on their own with Buck Wild and Taste of Your Love. Da Butt won Soul Train’s best R&B/Soul Single, Group in 1989.

EU has performed with Teena Marie, Morris Day and The Time, Mint Condition, Cameo, and countless others. They performed on a show with Bob Dylan in 1989, one of Sugar Bear’s career highlights. EU released the hit Umm Bop Bop in 2000. They dropped the single Bounce in 2001, garnering extensive airplay. EU appeared in the tribute DVD to Chuck Brown, Put Your Hands Up in 2002 (called quite possibly the best live concert DVD ever made by Murder Dog Magazine) with a brilliant set of live music, featuring a percussion showdown between Ju Ju House and Mighty Mo Hagans, along with blistering renditions of EU Freeze. Dog Star, Da Butt and much more. In 2003, EU performed to a national audience on the televised NAACP Awards’ Tribute to Spike Lee. Sugar Bear received the Legend Award at the second annual WKYS Go-Go Awards in 2007. He appears in a local TV commercial for an insurance company, and teaches special education at TC Williams.
